Dr. Michael
D. Mehta specializes in Science, Technology and Society: with a focus
on environmental and health risk issues. His academic background
includes a B.A. in Psychology, a Master in Environmental Studies, a
Ph.D. in Environmental Sociology, and post-doctoral training in Environmental Policy.
Dr. Mehta is Professor of Environmental Studies, Faculty of Science at the University of Winnipeg. He is exploring currently three topics:
(1) tidal energy and sea water desalination, (2) restoration of bull kelp beds off Gabriola Island BC, and (3) constructed wetlands for wastewater disposal.
Dr. Mehta is also an Affiliate Scientist with the McLaughlin Center for Population Health Risk Assessment at the University of Ottawa, a member of the Institute for Risk Research at the University of Waterloo, sits on the Research Management Committee for Prionet Canada, and is Associate Theme Leader for Prion Prevention and Preparedness for this Networks of Centres of Excellence
He has
held academic and administrative appointments at the University of Winnipeg (Principal, Richardson College for the Environment), University of Alberta (Population Research Laboratory and the Department of Sociology), the University of Saskatchewan (Department of Sociology and the College of Biotechnology), Queen’s University (School of Policy Studies and School of Environmental Studies), and York University (Faculty of Environmental Studies).
He is a co-founder of the Environmental Studies Association of Canada,
and a former research associate with BIOCAP
Canada (an organization out of Queen's University with a mandate to develop biologically-based solutions to climate change).
Dr. Mehta is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Nanotechnology and Molecular Computation, and sits on the editorial board of the
Journal of Nano Education. He was the publisher of the journal Canadian Studies in Population.
On a personal note, Dr. Mehta's ethnic background is Indo-Canadian. His father, Dr. Dinshaw Mehta (a retired Rheumatologist and Internal Medicine Specialist), came to Canada from Nagpur, India in 1958, and is a Zoroastrian. His mother, Sally Mehta (nee MacKay) was born in Ottawa and was of Scottish descent.
